K-pop MVs With Dark Aesthetic

Colors can invoke strong emotions on people. In K-pop videos, color schemes and aesthetics are used to give a certain vibe and make viewers feel a certain way. It's done so in a way that complements the meaning and sound of the song. Dark aesthetics are mainly used in videos to express seriousness, sadness and heartbreak. Here are some music videos with dark visuals. Which is your favorite and any that weren't included?

1. Ailee - Home

Ailee has a musical breakthrough with her newest track. Normally, she shows off her loud vocals, which are impressive, but her performance in Home shows that sometimes less is more. The track is r&b with a polished sound and subdued vocals. The lyrics, contrary to the songstress' typical "I don't need you" attitude, express her regret after a breakup. She just wants her former beau to come back home.
This is Ailee's first music video with such dark vulnerability. In the beginning, she is portrayed as sleeping beauty and looks at herself in a beauty-telling mirror. Then in another scene she is laying in a antique bed as if she's waiting for someone to wake her up. The person she is waiting for never comes, so another version of herself appears. I suppose this scene means that Ailee realizes she needs to take the initiative to get him back instead of silently hoping he'll return.
Positives: Catchy song, amazing vocals, Yoon Mirae's rap
Negatives: personally, I thought the dance break was a little awkward.

2. Rainbow - Black Swan

Black Swan is a serious, desperate song that expresses how being alone can drive a person crazy. The music video has a psychological thriller theme, in that the members of Rainbow are exposed to danger on a mental level; in this case loneliness.
The music video is all black and white, and Rainbow are dressed in  black-lace ballroom-esque outfits. At the opening and closing of the song, there is a vintage piano riff which makes me think of ballerinas.
Positives: Great, unique song
Negatives: Not a fan of the risque dance or outfits. I'd rather them dress classy and dance like ballerinas.

3. Jessi - Excessive Love

Sometimes you can love person so much that is suffocates them. In Excessive Love, Jessi sings of a past love that haunts her. Throughout the video, Jessi stands by a window, walks through eerie hallways and sings in front of a backdrop of twilight woods. At one part in the lyrics, love is compared to a war and that is reflected in the music video with burning and shattering objects. The visuals are mainly monochromatic, but the flames and roses that burn are in full color.
Positives: It's nice to hear and see Jessi without her tough persona.
Negatives: None

4. Ikon - Apology

Apology is about lies and broken promises. The speakers of the song deceived, neglected and failed to protect her so they are apologizing. It starts with an incriminating piano fill and everything throughout reflects regret and sincerity. Ikon are sincerely apologizing. They'd rather let her go so she won't get hurt by them again. The music video matches nicely and is like a compilation of the most climactic, emotional scenes of tv dramas.
Positives: Nice vocals from all the singers, and the rap from Bobby and B.I. are a contrasting element.
Negative: None

5. Song Ji-Eun - Don't Look At Me Like That

Don't Look At Me Like That is a Romeo and Juliet story. It talks about a love that is looked on with criticizing eyes. It reminds me of how in tv dramas, a girl and boy are in love, but the girl is treated coldly by society because she is poor and he is rich. I noticed that the music video focuses on mistreatment. When people are judged by others, it feels as if people are trying to take away their freedom. Ji-Eun is treated like an object and is bid on by rich people with masks. They pet her like an animal as if trying to feel the worth of her as a product. Naturally, with a theme like this, the visuals will be dark.
Positives: Beautiful song, could easily be an OST for a K-Drama.
Negatives: This isn't a negative (just my opinion), but the song outshines the video by far.

6. High4 - D.O.A (Dead or Alive)

D.O.A. is about dangerous love that drives a person crazy. With desperate vocals the members sing about falling into a poisonous relationship. This is reflected in a scene where a member is embraced by the creepy-looking hands of a woman. Clearly, she's bad news but the heart wants what it wants, The music video is a complete emotional wreck with scenes of broken mirrors, dark rooms and foggy air.
Positives: The members are talented and the each have a nice vocal color, otherwise I probably wouldn't like this song.
Negatives: Generic song sound-wise.

This or That? {6th Edition}

Ever hear a song that reminds you of another? This is a friendly comparison of videos and songs with similar genres, concepts and themes.

Taeyeon I v. Ju Jingyi Everyday

'I' is Taeyeon's well-received solo debut! The song is a pop-ballad with soft-rock elements and boasts the songstress' steady vocals. There is beautiful scenery in the music video, as it was filmed in New Zealand, and there's a "finding myself" plot. In the same way, Ju Jingyi's 'Everyday' also has a visually appealing music video. She wears boho-chic clothes like Taeyeon and sings with a clear voice.

My Choice: My favorite is Ju JingYu's. There's so many members in SNH48, so it's nice to hear Jinyu's voice by itself.

Artist Profiles~ I.O.I

I.O.I, meaning "Ideal of Idol" is a project k-pop group that was formed on the reality TV show 'Produce 101'. The eleven members were chosen from 101 trainees of various record companies. The members, many of whom are in other k-pop groups, will go back to their companies when I.O.I disbands in January 2017.
Girl Group
I.O.I
K-pop/Korean

"Dream Girls" was intended to be reminiscent of Girls' Generation's "Into The New World". It has a classic sports-themed/school girl music video that most girl groups do at least once. The best part of I.O.I's debut song is the lyrics. Rather than a sappy love song (which is nice, but overdone) the message is to confidently chase your dreams and never quit.

I.O.I. debuted their first sub-unit of eight members with a remake of the 1963 track "What A Man" by Linda Lyndell. It is the edgiest the group has ever been and the song is a platform for their strong vocals! Chung-ha, the main dancer, made the choreography for the song and the music video features leather outfits and a lot of sass.

JYP of JYP Entertainment collaborated with I.O.I for this track. It's playful, with a very fast rhythm and childish charm. The lyrics describe a girl trying to tell if a boy really likes her and how to cautiously approach a relationship. This is I.O.I last release before their disbandment and they really go out with a bang. Due to the over-repetitive chorus, you won't forget this song for a while!

This or That? {5th Edition}

Ever hear a song that reminds you of another? This is a friendly comparison of videos and songs with similar genres, concepts and themes.

Red Velvet Russian Roulette v. I.O.I Very Very Very

Red Velvet released Russian Roulette which is super-catchy, playful and somewhat robotic. This sugary synth-pop song is paired with a sweet and sour music video. The girls are dolled up and look so endearing, but as you watch you soon realize they're trying to harm each other. Yikes.
About a month later, I.O.I dropped 'Very Very Very' which is just as fun and catchy. Both songs are repetitive and playful, but the real similarities are in the music videos which share the same concept. They both have a sports theme, bizarre scenes and similar styling.

My Choice: I prefer 'Very Very Very' because the vocals have more emotion and the music video doesn't have dark undertones like Russian Roulette. Both are great though!

Playlist 14. Sugar Rush

Theme: Sweet
Songs with a [♥] are my preference/a personal favorite

Songs about sugar, spice and everything nice.

1. As One - Candy ball
Cantonese
As One is a four member girl group from Hong Kong. You may know one of the members, Shin, from the TV show Produce 101. The original version of 'Candy Ball' is in Cantonese, but As One made their K-pop debut with a Korean version of the song. I love the colorful music video and pop-ish tune which reminds me of 'Glass Bead' by Gfriend.
Review: Song - 3/5 MV - 4/5

2. Orange Caramel - Cookies, Cream & Mint
Japanese
I always thought Orange Caramel was the perfect group for listeners with a sweet tooth. They have a 'candy culture' concept and even their name sounds like a taffy flavor! This song is from their first Japanese album and the lyrics are like an ice cream menu. "Chocolate chip, Mocha Fudge, Cake Cream and Mint, Vanilla Strawberry".
Review: Song - 2/5 MV - 3/5

3. Fiestar - Apple Pie
Korean
Fiestar has femininity, charm and cuteness all baked in their latest single "Apple Pie". Much different from their serious music, 'Apple Pie' is a fun synth-pop track. The music video has a Snow White theme. And rightly so, because...apples!
Review: Song - 3/5 MV - 2.5/5

4. NC.A - Vanilla Shake
Korean
I like this song. But, there are some elements that don't quite belong. For example, the dance. I think the dance should be cuter, because NC.A looks like a little girl! A little less 'Girl's Day' and more 'Apink' would make this music video better, in my opinion.
Review: Song - 2.5/5 MV - 2/5

5. Gemma - Sugar Rush
Mandarin
Taiwanese celebrity Gemma (aka Gui Gui) signed with CJE&M for her K-pop debut! So, she has a Korean version of Sugar Rush on her mini-album. In the music video nurse, Gemma gives her patients doses of sugary candy. Sweet.
Review: Song - 3/5 MV - 4/5

6. NCT Dream - Chewing Gum
Korean
NCT Dream is the third NCT sub-unit and its members are 14 to 17 years old. Not my cup of tea, but the members sure are adorable. The school concept has never been more suitable and the kids-with-candy theme is appropriate. There's also a Chinese version.
Review: Song - 2/5 MV - 2/5

7. Danni - Soda
Mandarin
This singer is from the four-member hip-hop group UV Girls. They debuted in 2014 with a mini album, but haven't released anything since. Danni is the first to have a solo release. 'Soda' has a K-pop style and can be compared to Hyuna during her early days.
Review: Song - 2/5 MV - 2/5

8. F(x) - Ice Cream
Korean
Like many f(x) songs, 'Ice Cream' is an acquired taste. Their quirky style is not for everyone, but it's just my flavor! The song compares first love to vanilla ice cream. "I found you, I found love I melt whenever I’m in front of you".
Review: Song - 4/5

9. Orange Caramel - Milkshake
Korean
Off of the group's mini-album 'Lipstick', this track could've been a title track too. It has a fast melody and catchy hook. All this talk of Orange Caramel makes me really want them to have a comeback!
Review: Song - 3/5

10. Laboum - Sugar Sugar
Korean
Laboum embrace sisterhood and friendship with a slumber-party. The girls are talking about a sweet boy that they really like even though he's not Kim Soo Hyun or Lee Min Ho. I like the fun innocence that Laboum show as they crush on a boy.
Review: Song - 2.5/5 MV - 4/5

Artist Profiles~Girls' Generation

Girl's Generation, also known as Sonyeo Sidae (SNSD), is perhaps Korea's top girl group. Their career stretches back 9 years and they keep a good-girl image (with an occasional sassy song). SNSD went from 9 to 8 members in 2014 when Jessica Jung left, however, they've maintained their popularity.
Girl Group

Girl's Generation (SNSD, SoShi)
Korean

'Lion Heart' is a retro-pop track about a girl that falls in love with a playboy. He has a wandering heart so she tries to tame him like a lion. In the music video, a lion-man pursues the hearts of each SNSD member behind their backs and gets caught cheating! Then...you'll have to watch it yourself! The entire thing is true Girl's Generation. And from what I can tell, it was just as popular with international fans as Korean fans.

This is another retro-influenced jukebox jam. 'Dancing Queen' is actually a remake of Duffy's 'Mercy' with lyrics written by members Tiffany and Jessica. The video is reminiscent of 'Gee' because they all wearing colored skinny jeans and then one scene hints at a later release when Sooyoung says 'ayo gg'.(from I Got A Boy released a year later).

With scratchy electronic synths and bass, 'Mr. Mr' is perfect for dancing. It's not cutesy like their typical music, but there's still slivers of the classic SNSD in there. Mainly because of the catchy, repetitive chorus. My favorite part is the music video, which has a dark doctor theme. The visuals are overrun with the color pink and SNSD's 'Mister' gets a heart transplant.
