Top K-pop Albums {Free Somebody by Luna}

Released: May 2016
1. Free Somebody 2. Breathe 3. Keep On Doin' 4. I Wish 5. Galaxy 6. My Medicine

Luna, the main vocalist of girl group f(x), made her solo debut with a mini-album of 6 songs. She went solo in the truest sense and, very commendably, carried this album completely by herself. No other artists are featured on the album. And what's more is, Luna wrote and composed two songs ('I Wish' and 'My Medicine' herself. 'Free Somebody' explores the electronic genre and has an overall theme of self-empowerment. It includes both upbeat dance songs and sentimental ballads for listeners of either preference. I'll only talk about my top three, but the entire album is definitely worth a listen!

1. Free Somebody

The title track of the album is a funky electro-house song that was co-composed by the American singer Jojo. It is full of electronic synths and keyboard chords which make it a perfect hybrid of modern and retro. 'Free Somebody' is about wanting to share someone's dreams with the world. The liberating lyrics are paired well with the fun dance beat and Luna's vocal charms.

In the music video, Luna meets a handsome stranger in the elevator which then triggers a series of psychedelic events. She is plunged to and from an animated world, enjoying herself and dancing all throughout. There are many curious things happening, which probably aren't meant to be understood. Either way, I like how the scenes of chromatic film and cartoon transition smoothly.

2. Keep On Doin'

Luna wants you to "keep on doin' what you do". She sings for you to "color yourself with your own color....in this black and white world". While encouraging you to be uniquely yourself, Luna dances to the beat of her own drum in a sense. 'Keep On Doin'' takes you to a party in outer space with its unusual sound. It opens with a warped, synthesized intro, then bounces into a slick beat. Later in the song, there is "rap" break that has f(x) written all over it. It's weird but also very daring and brilliant!

3. Galaxy

'Galaxy' has a Euro-pop influence and showcases the powerful vocals that we enjoy in f(x)'s music.  It has a more conventional sound than the previously mentioned dance tracks on the album. I love the path that the song takes, the climax and points of intensity.

K-pop MVs With Dream-like Aesthetic

Concepts are very important in K-pop music videos. The attention that was put in the special effects, lighting and sets give these music videos an ethereal feel. So much so, that it brings the song alive and makes it even more enjoyable. You may even feel as if it was all a dream!

1. Ten - Dream In A Dream

NCT member Ten made his unofficial solo debut through SM's music project "SM Station". 'Dream In A Dream' is an ethereal song that is heavily influenced by Oriental art and tradition. Ten sings about a love that is somewhere in between a dream and reality. While there are very few lyrics, listeners are kept entertained with the sounds of Asian instruments, echoes, and synths.

The music video is an extension to the artistry. Ten, who specializes in dance, showcases his finesse through elegant choreography. He dances in front of a lighted background that switches between warm and cool colors. The visuals of the video are built on simplicity: every scene has one focal point. The veil decorations, smokey background and slow-motion scenes all make up Ten's hazy surroundings and give viewers the feeling that they are not completely awake.
Positives: It's artistic and looks like a theatrical performance.
Negatives: None

2. Heize - Star

Many people expected Heize to make rap or hip-hop music after competing as a contestant on "Unpretty Rapstar 2". Instead she released a string of groovy r&b songs and strayed even further from the rap genre with her single 'Star'. 'Star' is a soothing ballad, much like something IU or Lee Hi would do. It can even be compared to Taeyeon's SM Station track 'Rain' for its theme and sentimentality.

This lullaby-like song is complemented by the dreamy outer-space concept of the video. Heize is in an illuminated room suspended in outer space. In other scenes, she is sitting by self on the moon. Heize is often portrayed looking up into the starlit night sky which conveys the loneliness, longing and wonder expressed in the lyrics. "Even if I can’t see you because of the clouds...Every time I can’t see you I get nervous."
Positives: The color scheme of the music video is one point and the aesthetic (glitter, lights, and Heize's styling) is enchanting. It's also nice to hear Heize sing as she has a nice voice.
Negatives: Heize's rap in the song is very lacking.

3. Red Velvet - One Of These Nights

Up until recently, Red Velvet have taken on either a "red" or a "velvet" concept for their releases. 'One Of These Nights', being of the later concept, is a soft, smooth r&b ballad. Also called "Seventh Day of the Seventh Month/ July 7th", it is based on the Korean folktale of star-crossed lovers who could only meet on that one day out of the year. Red Velvet sing this mournful song hoping to meet him once again, even if it is in a dream.

There many curious things in this video. For example, the girls of Red velvet are dressed rather brightly for such a sad song and the scenes transition in an imaginary fashion. Also, they all mysteriously face water in someway during the duration. Some fans have come up with the theory that 'One Of These Nights' is a tribute to the victims of the Sewol Ferry tragedy. They support this theory with the fact that Red Velvet appear to be on a boat that fills with water, along with other "proof".
Positives: The symbolism in the music video and soothing sound of the song are both compelling. The transitioning reminds me of Red Velvet's 'Automatic'.
Negatives: The video may be hard to understand at first, but it makes more sense after reading about the Sewol theory.

4. Kim Chungha - Week

Kim Chungha earned a spot in the girl-group I.O.I and has made a name for herself after competing in Mnet's trainee survival program "Produce 101". Now that I.O.I has disbanded, Chungha debuted as a solo artist. 'Week', a pre-release single from her first mini-album, is a slow-rolling r&b ballad that expresses loneliness.
Chungha sings in a soft, breathy voice and in the same way, the music video has soft colors and delicate visuals. And just the lyrics: "Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs, Fri, Sat, Sun. Where am I?... Another day passes and I fall asleep", the theme is the passing of time.
Positives: I love the music video and Chungha's vocals.
Negatives: None

5. Moon Hyuna - Cricket Song

Moon Hyuna started her career as a soloist after leaving the girl-group Nine muses in October 2016. Her style of music proved to be very different from that of her former group. 'Cricket Song' is an electro-pop with a mild beat and light vocals.
This is very much like 'Star' by Heize mentioned above. The songs is like a lullaby or something one would listen to in the middle of the night. The music video also focuses on the night sky and string lights.
Positives: It's nice to see Hyuna grow as a artist. She's establishing her own sound and even participated in writing the lyrics.
Negatives: The vocals do not sound good to me.

This or That? {9th Edition}

Ever hear a song that reminds you of another? This is a friendly comparison of videos and songs with similar genres, concepts, and themes.

Chungha Why Don't You Know v. Taeyeon Why

'Why Don't You Know (Ft. Nucksal)' marks the official solo debut of former I.O.I member Chungha. The song, which boasts fun summer vibes, is tropical house with indie influences. It opens with guitar riffs and maintains a light EDM bounce throughout. All of this is paired with an indie-influenced music video in which Chunga shows off her moves under the sun. Perhaps the highlight of the whole release is the captivating nature aesthetic. Fantasy scenes of blue skies that double as water, dolphins, and flowers make up most of the backdrop setting.

'Why' captures the fun of summer in a similar fashion. Like the former, 'Why' is a tropical house song with guitar and EDM in the instrumental. Taeyeon shows the same sun-loving attitude as Chungha while playing around outdoors.

Taeyeon - Why

My Choice:
Chungha's music video is definitely perfect for the summer and I'll say it was more visually pleasing than 'Why'. However, the song has some shortcomings. At times it seems Chungha is straining or trying to sing out of her vocal range, which isn't a pleasant sound. Plus, I thought Nucksal's rap was very unnecessary and interrupted the flow of the song. Taeyeon's vocals in 'Why' and the flow of the track is more appealing to me so I choose 'Why'.

May In Music

May 2017 was an outstanding month for k-pop. Aside from the enjoyable music, this month stands out because BTS (Bangtan Boys)  made history as the first K-pop group to attend, get nominated for and win an award at the Billboard Music Awards! If you need more reminders as to why May was great, check out the songs below!

1. Euna Kim X Exy - Love Therapy
Korean
Released: May 4th
Euna Kim was a member of the girl group "The Ark" who debuted in 2015 and disbanded soon after. Then, to restart her music career, Euna Kim participated in season 2 of Unpretty Rapstar, alongside Exy (Cosmic Girls) and other female rappers. Some months after the show, Euna Kim and Exy collaborate in this laid-back love anthem. Together they rap about the push and pull of a relationship. As a final treat, solo singer Zia lends her vocals to the chorus.

2. Luhan - Say It
Mandarin
Released: May 14th
"Say It" is Luhan's second single off of his is single album "Imagination", which is the second to last release of his compilation album "XXVII". It is an EDM track with R&B elements and it's lyrics celebrate relieving oneself from the worries of a busy lifestyle. In the music video, a camera follows the daily routine of the main character, all the while, making viewers dizzy.

3. Ikon - Bling Bling
Korean
Released: May 22nd
After a long absence, Ikon released a double single album,  just like their senior group Winner did last month.  It includes the hip-hop number "Bling Bling" composed by the group leader B.I. and rumored member of YG's new boy group, Millennium. "Bling Bling" has an energetic backdrop of brassy horns, hype chanting, and heavy bass. Ikon prove themselves to be "total cool kids" with all the bells and whistles!

4. Seventeen - Don't Want To Cry
Korean
Released: May 22nd
Seventeen is a group that I remember for its myriad of members and their trademark brassy-pop songs. This time around Seventeen switched gears for an emotional EDM track that seems to have been influenced by the American pop duo, the Chainsmokers. "Don't Want To Cry" is about just that: not wanting to cry from heartbreak despite having so many tears. It's complete with eye-catching choreography that effectively conveys the song's emotions.

5. Faky - Someday We'll Know
Japanese
Released: May 23rd
Faky pre-released their second single of 2017 ahead of their upcoming mini-album. It follows the popular trend of tropical house that has been seen often in K-pop this past year. "Someday We'll Know" is a song that showcases the members' vocals and has backdrop music that is up-tempo and fun, but not overpowering. Anna, Lil'Fang, Akina and Mikako roam the streets of (what appears to be) Tokyo and showcase their dance moves in bright summery clothes!

6. Kriesha Tiu - Trouble
Korean
Released: May 23rd
You may know Kriesha Tiu (or Chrisha Chu) as the runner-up of K-pop Star 6 and a member of the on-show girl group KWINS. She is notable for her bubbly personality and for being the first Filipino-American idol. Now she has made her much-anticipated debut as a solo singer (despite her ability to perform very well in a group)! "Trouble" is a fun, Disney/Nickelodeon-eque song that is fitting for a  teen like Kriesha. It's about being in "danger" when you fall for someone: thinking about them all the time and becoming dizzy when you see them.
